Andrew Jimenez 03 // Brassai + Ken Schles

Ken Schles/Brassai // Andrew Jimenez (NYC march 14th 2015)

Within in the same gallery, I was inspired by two artist at the same time. Ken Schles, and  Brassai. They both focused on night photography, in two of the most major cities in the Western World. New York City for Scheles, Paris for Brassai. Schles is a native of the city, while Brassai is Hungarian. The photographs, all in black and white, aren’t “perfect”. Some have motion blur and camera shake. It’s intimate, in a sense. It’s all found light, mostly artificial. (Taking advantage of street lights and indoor lighting)

Both of these artist, have photos of friendship, of romance. They are nostalgic. They blur not only the image, but the boundary between subject and photographer. They have similar subject matter, despite being in seperate hemispheres, and from different generations.
